K Pop star Seungri:A military court in South Korea sentenced former K-pop star Seungri to three years in prison on Thursday, more than two years after allegations of sexual assault first surfaced in the country.
The former Big Bang member was indicted without detention in 2020 on charges of organizing prostitutes for investors, embezzlement, bribery, illegal gambling, foreign exchange violations and food hygiene laws.
K Pop star Seungri Life Story
Seungri, whose real name is Lee Seung-hyun, was one of the biggest K-pop stars before leaving the entertainment industry theatrically in March 2019, when it was revealed that he was under investigation for the above allegations. The legal proceedings were conducted by a military court, due to the fact that Seungri was undergoing military service – a mandatory requirement for men in South Korea – at the time of his arrest.
Reuters reported that Lee, who appeared in military uniform before the military court in Yongin, south of Seoul, shook his head as he delivered the verdict, which also included an order to pay a fine of 1.15 billion won ($990,000).
According to Reuters, Lee denied most of the allegations. Seungri’s indictment and conviction was part of the so-called “Burning Sun scandal” at a nightclub in Seoul’s dazzling Gangnam district. Seungri sat on the club’s board of directors, and oversaw its promotion. According to the Seoul Metropolitan Police, Burning Sun has been the site of bribery, violence against customers, VIP prostitutes, rape, drug trafficking and drug abuse. Several women have alleged that they were assaulted or drugged at the club.
