WPL 2023 Auction:Smriti Mandanna, Harmanpreet Kaur and young star Shafali Verma will be the most sought-after Indian players and a bidding war is expected to begin during the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction in Mumbai on Monday.
Five teams – Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, RCB, Gujarat Giants and UP Warriors – will be bidding for 90 players in the 409 roster.
There will be a salary portfolio of Rs 12 crore per team for the first year and a team size of 18 including six overseas players. And out of 60 Indian women, at least 20 to 25 are sure to be selected and fetch a good price in the auction.
Of the 409 players shortlisted for the auction, 246 are from India. 163 players are foreigners. These also include eight associate countries. Apart from India, 28 players from Australia, 27 from England, 23 from West Indies, 19 from New Zealand, 17 from South Africa, 15 from Sri Lanka, 11 from Zimbabwe, nine from Bangladesh, six from Ireland and four from Ireland have been shortlisted. There is one player each from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the United States of America, Hong Kong, the Netherlands and Thailand.
It is important to remember that the inaugural 2023 season of the league will see five WPL teams competing against each other on the field. Bengaluru, Gujarat Giants, Lucknow and Mumbai will be among the teams that will compete in the game.
Five teams will play in the first season of the 2023 Women’s Premier League. Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Gujarat Giants, UP Warriors and Mumbai Indians are participating. Each team can buy a maximum of 18 players, which means that 90 players are expected to be auctioned in the first WPL auction.
